Technology has advanced so much in just 14 years.
In 2007, the first iPhone was launched and the technology that’s boomed since then has totally revolutionized the way we communicate and do business.
Now we’re in a pandemic and many places are in lockdown. Most of the things we’re doing with remote work and the gig economy couldn’t have even existed just 2 decades ago.
I wonder what the world will look like 2 decades from now? I wonder what studies will emerge and what they will show about how the world changed from this unique age time for technology?
By every measure, it’s like the wild west.
Things are changing at such a rapid pace that it’s almost impossible to understand the impact they’re having.
That’s why we’re talking about sobriety and social media today.
There’s a huge upside to being on top of technology and social media. The ability to stay connected with people you care about, people you’ve drifted away from, people you can’t see regularly is a massive good.
The sheer volume of resources on sobriety and people who’re similar to you sharing their stories and journeys on sobriety to help you not feel isolated and alone is absolutely amazing.
But on the downside, it’s eroding our ability to communicate meaningfully with each other.
Children are underdeveloped in how they express themselves and their emotions. Adults are feeling more isolated in a connected world because we’re starved deep and meaningful conversations with each other.
Social media and trends are directly influencing culture and forcing unrealistic expectations on adults and children alike. Comparison, envy, jealousy and lack are being manufactured on a massive scale.
Also, the teams that designed these social media platforms designed them specifically to make you addicted to them. If you’re addicted, you keep coming back and they can use you to run ads and generate revenue.
So it’s a question of balancing the good while being aware of the bad.
